EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Hi Mary! Welcome back to Asian Music Review! Congrats on the release! What was your inspiration when you were writing this project?

Released on June 9, 2023. DTTAH (Don’t Try This At Home) is a fun, indie folky pop/rock summer song about taking an adventure. It was written in response to a challenge to write a summer song. But more than that simplistic overview, the song is an allegory of my journey and adventure in music. I never considered being a singer back in 2020. So everything has been new territory to conquer.

What lessons would you like to impart with your audience?

It’s an invitation to dream, to take risks, to run, jump, and leap-out of our comfort zones.

As we dream bigger, we realize we can only achieve higher if we don’t do it alone. The journey becomes more fun, though messier, when you set goals and achieve them with other people, the right people, rather than just by yourself.

What is your favorite part of this body of work?

The kids’ voices!!! Aliyah and Carlisle have grown up thinking I’m their playmate. I thought it would be a great idea to have them sing with me in this track. It definitely made notches better, livelier and more fun, which is exactly what the song needs.

What’s next on your journey?

I released a music video for the first time for DTTAH. As for future releases, I’ll be releasing a song which was co-written by a friend in the UK. We hope to encourage victims of sex-trafficking with this song, to lend them our voices in their tragic plight.
