Welcome to Asian Music Review! Tell us a little bit about you and your music.
I’m Mary Ozaraga. Music lover all my life. I’ve been writing songs seriously for the past two years. I’m an architect by profession, a worship leader by passion, and a singer-songwriter by mission.
I never considered myself as such, but this is where God led my music and the art of sharing them to take shape. I’m very intentional about the message I share through the songs I write.
Congrats on the release! What was your inspiration when you were writing this project?
Released December 6, 2022 I wrote Beautiful Mess in the heat of the pandemic, the first Christmas season we spent indoors. The streets were empty and filled with anxiety. The song—its haunting aura throughout, is set in that backdrop. The saxophone interwoven into the vocal melodies mimics the loneliness and the cry that gripped people during that time.
What lessons would you like to impart with your audience?
Beautiful Mess is a Christmas ballad that takes the story of Jesus full circle. But more than Christmas, the song transcends seasons, with a message relevant all year round. The world culture emphasizes gift-giving during Christmas to the point where we become most materialistic.
This song talks about the greatest gift ever given—amazing grace coming in the package of tattered flesh, woven in Blood divine—a Beautiful Mess, hoping we will not shortchange the reason for the season.
What is your favorite part of this body of work?
More than anything, what I want to highlight is the message of the song. In the production, I also like how the saxophone lines play with the melodies from beginning to end.
I’d like to thank my producer Alain Lee Godornes of Shelter Studios, and my father, Ike Ozaraga, for playing the saxophone for this track.
What’s next on your journey?
I’ll perform in Red’s Entertainment Contemporary Worship concert on February 3, 7 pm PST (Feb 4, 11 am PH Time). Then, I have two songs in the works—one for empowerment to victims of sex trafficking and one for another love song that I’m planning to release in the coming months.
There’s also the hope to release my first music video this year. But I need to conquer my aversion towards being in videos.
